Absolutely one of the most original games I’ve played recently, this story-driven affair swings for the fences and somewhat gets there
This is one of those titles I’ve actually been following for a while, as even though I don’t typically get excited for narrative-heavy games the musical hook really intrigued me. I’m happy to say that, for the most part, Stray Gods delivered what I was looking for as well now playing it, but then again I’m also a bit of a mythology nerd so seeing various gods realized as flawed characters with some personalities that are usually spot-on in their depiction. Your character, Grace, is a struggling singer and gets pulled into a much more complicated world when the muse Calliope shows up at her apartment on the edge of death. Taking on her godly soul, Grace is then thrust into this hidden world where she finds that her first task is proving that she wasn’t the one who did it. What follows is a bit of a mystery adventure, but the unique hook is that given your powers to inspire others around you much of the dialogue in the game is instead expressed through song. Now, true to the fact that you have the power to choose the next verse or tone of the music as it is being sung, some lyrics and even singing may not always work out as smoothly as you’d like. That said, the pure audacity of the game’s creativity in this area can sometimes make for engrossing music bound to the story in a way I’ve never seen before. While I’m sure that won’t sound like something everyone will dig, if you like experiences that take bold steps to set themselves apart this is an excellent candidate for your attention.
