Mixing together Metroidvania sensibilities with some challenging platforming makes for a refreshing budget package
While at first glance Lootbox Lyfe+ may not be much of a looker, if you give it a little time it doesn’t take long for its hooks to get into if you’re into platforming that takes a bit more effort than average. With a map you’ll slowly be able to explore by finding new abilities that let you get by obstacles, you’ll be building your skills completely from the ground up, conquering some tricky challenges before unlocking something new. Once you’ve got your new move under your belt you’ll then return to looking for the next challenge and so on. I will say that there are some situations which can be a bit more frustrating due to how the game’s mechanics work. In particular your level of friction on walls as you try to descend them can be a bit aggravatingly inconsistent, sometimes too slow and others too fast, and before I hit the wall I was usually left to guess which it would be. Outside of a few frustrations like that though, this is a surprisingly-good effort that you can pick up on the eShop for less than $10, and that’s hard to argue with if you don’t mind having to work a little harder than usual to progress.
