A charming, well-animated, and generally all-around adequate Metroidvania that still comes up a bit short in the space
While it’s almost always easy to be a fan of the colorful and detailed characters and animations sported in most Inti Creates titles, the consistency of the gameplay itself doesn’t always feel like a sure thing across titles and likely teams. For me Yohane is a bit of a poster child for the wall they can sometimes hit, but overall it’s still a bit hard to be hyper-critical. It looks great, and its play and combat are fluid enough, but I think it’s the relatively small areas you’ll work within before needing to load another that laid the foundation of my problems. This often very segmented design where you go through a relatively small area, clearing it, to then hit an exit and wait for the next area to load, really robbed the experience of a flow and given there are plenty of competitors out there that don’t have this issue it’s hard not to knock it down a bit for that. Regardless, if you’re a fan of their style you probably won’t mind as the game has merit, it’s just easy for it to get lost more towards the middle of the genre pack on the whole.
