While only lasting perhaps an hour, this tale of young love has enough charm and small diversions to make you smile
When reviewing what are essentially bite-sized games, it’s always a bit of a challenge when it comes to scoring them. There’s no doubt that the price needs to be at least somewhat appropriate, replayability should be considered, and then of course how engaging the experience can manage to be in a short amount of time is vital. With the base of its story being wrapped around childhood love, The Day I Became a Bird at least has a theme I’d argue most people can relate to in some way, so that’s a plus. With the story taking place over the course of a few days, you’ll quickly move through the phases of discovery, infatuation, and then trying to in some way woo a fellow classmate who happens to be really into birds. There’s an innocence to it all that’s certainly charming, and the game’s storybook art style helps reinforce the childlike wonder of it all nicely. In terms of gameplay it’s also nice that the developer put some effort into trying to keep the experience as engaging as possible. Whether it’s through having you complete puzzles, participate in some action through specific timed button presses, or moving through hoops while riding or flying, it’s nice that the fact that this is meant to be a game isn’t lost along the way. Some collectible feathers will also push completionists to put in the extra effort to find every hidden surprise, which is also a nice and thoughtful touch. While, for the price, I wish there were a little more meat on the bone to enjoy, there’s no denying this makes for an enjoyable, though brief, time.
