In an eShop full of classic turn-based RPGs, the unique hook of Raging Bytes helps it stand apart from the competition
Though I’ve played quite a number of pretty traditional turn-based RPGs on the Switch, I can’t say I’ve run into anything quite like Raging Bytes. Certainly there have been a wide variety of games made over the years set in some sort of zombie apocalypse, but I can’t say I’ve encountered one in this genre. The result can be frustrating, but at the same time its unpredictability can make for a sort of thrilling experience. Replacing random encounters as you try to explore and find resources with enemies you can see and either work around or come at with a bit of strategy was a smart move, but the risks in combat are quite real as some bad luck can make even encounters that feel like they should be a cakewalk bad news if someone ends up getting infected, which can make everything come crashing down in a hurry. The world you play in, the different dynamics your survival brings to the table, and the somewhat unpredictable nature of things help the game to stand apart from the competition. Just whether or not those challenges and frustrations are what you’re looking for would be a fair question.
