A well-implemented puzzler that keeps its ideas almost as simple as its look, but can still be rewarding

Sometimes there are games released on the eShop that are so simple in their design and execution that they can be difficult to say all that much about. Hook: Complete Edition is one such release, combining the original and simpler Hook with its more complex successor into one package. The thing is, though it may not be all that exciting to look at, there’s no question that under the hood it at least has some satisfying puzzle play in store.

In terms of the design, there isn’t much to it, but that isn’t meant so much as a dig as a compliment of sorts, as it has a simple visual style and means of control… but it absolutely works. Given that there are no formal instructions in-game, that simplicity comes in handy when you’re trying to get acclimated to how to play, simply needing to press on the circular ends of various hooks you’ll see on the screen, making them retract and taking them off the board. The trick is that if you don’t do this in the proper order they’ll get snagged, making you fail in your current attempt.

Once you’ve got this basic concept down, from there it’s really just about the game continuing to throw in more and more complexity for you to contend with. You’ll need to be able to visually work your way through layers of different hooks, trying to figure out which ones to trigger when, deal with multiple hooks tied to the same button, and more the further you go. It isn’t terribly complex, but there’s absolutely room for enjoyment in its simplicity, and in many cases more elaborate puzzles are often quite aesthetically beautiful in their design. It may not take that long to work through, but with a budget price, and a surprising degree of variety throughout, it’s still quite satisfying for the cost of admission.
