Reviews:
  • Interesting characters, some drama, and a pretty light but engaging take on real-time strategy help this stand out some

While I don’t always necessarily get along with games that sport very anime-inspired art out there and their often more unusual storylines, in the case of GrimGrimoire OnceMore it really clicked for me. Even better, though you could criticize what can feel like a lack of visual variety in battles as you progress, there’s a pretty smart and approachable version of real-time strategy to be played here as well, a subgenre under-represented as a whole on the Switch. One thing there can be no doubt of is that the game has some really unusual characters with some often very dramatic relationships, and as you go through that will bring on plenty of narrative twists and turns that really do help drive you to get through the next battle to see what happens next. In terms of the battles, it can initially take some getting used to how to mechanically take charge of everything, but I was impressed that the controller support is excellent with plenty of methods to select and direct your units, something many titles in the space struggle with. While more hardcore RTS fans may find it a bit too simple to really enjoy, for anyone looking to check out the genre for the first time or who don’t mind some strategy to go with a decent story this may be worth a look.
