It has a different sort of look, and the 3 firing modes are appreciated, but in general it’s just a generic shooter
If you’re a fan of old-school arcade shooting, the Switch has more than got you covered. Whether your tastes are for classic vertical or side-scrolling, plain old shmup or bullet hell, there are a number of options available to you. That’s great for gamers, but not so hot for developers, because that means you can’t just release anything on the eShop and expect people to dig it.Unfortunately for Cycle Chaser H-5, it’s stuck firmly in the “Meh” zone on multiple fronts. Sure, it has an overall graphical style that’s at least novel, if a bit bland. It powers you up pretty much right out of the gate, allowing you to shift between 3 shooting styles at will, but that also means there won’t be any power-ups along the way to up the excitement and make you dread dying since you’ll lose all or at least most of them. If you were to ask me what style of shooting it represents, I’m not even sure I’d be able to say precisely, other than just sort of doing its own thing, but a bit half-heartedly.Now, you could argue that for its budget price it isn’t too bad, but I’d counter that there are other budget shooters out there that are simply superior, and since it isn’t unusual to see some solid shooters on sale you can absolutely do better with even a little patience. That isn’t to say the game is terrible, or that there’s something debilitatingly wrong with it. It’s just when you plot out the continuum of shooting excellence on the system, it quickly falls to the lower end of the spectrum. While its overall execution may be fair, there’s no question that its ambitions were low, making it a pretty dull affair.
