A toothless and bland update of a game people enjoyed playing on their phone when there weren’t other options…
While I respect the casual space, and that sometimes people are just looking for games that help them unload their stress and veg out a little, it’s important to keep in mind that even with games that are inherently laid back there are good and bad titles out there. Just like we’ve seen with more intense games, perhaps even casual titles from over the years can spark nostalgia as well, and if you had access to an early mobile phone there’s a good chance that you’re acquainted with, and even may have some love for, the classic Snake. The question Color Snake is looking to answer is whether something so completely basic can be somehow improved upon and adapted to take a form on a modern gaming console that still feels worthwhile. In this case, I’m thinking the answer is no.This take on the classic formula peppers in a little more variety, and adds a dash of color, but honestly doesn’t otherwise aspire to much. The trick here is that you’re a string of colored cubes, and in order to complete each stage, you’ll need to be sure to run into the cube that matches your current head. If you touch one that’s the wrong color, that segment will instead make you longer, and at times you’ll need to weave around in order to succeed. There are also frequent bonus levels where you’ll either try to grab as many coins as possible or collide with bombs to blow yourself apart. The problem, as you may have gathered by these descriptions, is that there’s simply not much going on here. While there’s a very mild progression in difficulty, the overall simplicity and slow pace of movement remove almost any illusion of even a meager challenge. Worse, the frequent bonus levels, which ultimately all feel the same outside of which power-ups you manage to grab, further dilute the experience, ensuring you’ll have quickly unlocked the handful of minor cosmetic changes to your snake. I suppose it could be decent for playing while doing something else, but there’s just not much going on here.
