While it does provide a reasonably-challenging shooter experience that feels somewhat distinctive, a lack of polish and likely longevity keep it from being more memorable
Given the sheer volume of great arcade shooters in the Switch eShop, as I’ve noted many times before, there’s an undeniable challenge for any developers coming to the market with a new one. For a reviewer like me, determining where each title falls in the genre pecking order is critical, but given the variety in styles of play, difficulty, and even cost, it’s still quite a bit of a challenge.Oddly enough, Blast’N Bounty comes with at least a little bit of a story, and while normally this sort of thing can be mildly annoying when it holds up just getting to play, in this case it’s just slight enough to go by quickly. In addition, it has the benefit of setting the expectation that each zone you work through will be different, and letting you know a little something about each boss as well. This is essentially a revenge tale, with your main character Quad going after the gang members that hung him out to dry, before then taking on his former right-hand man.In terms of play I’d say that it’s mostly fine, with you acquiring new drones on each stage as you make progress that provide aid in your quest. The fact that you can choose the order of the zones you’re working through thus has the added benefit of loading up the ones you find the most helpful quickly, though honestly as chaotic as the action tends to be your main challenge tends to just be keeping track of the action and trying to avoid being hit first and foremost. That’s what gives the game a somewhat nice edge of difficulty, but at the same time there’s just a lack of art to it all. Up against loads of other shooters that feel like they were meticulously designed, this feels more like a kitchen sink approach, and while it’s engaging while it lasts it also ultimately feels quite forgettable. For the price it isn’t a bad deal, but there are absolutely a load of better shooters out there, even ones with comparably low prices.
