If you’re a fan of retro gaming, or some of Namco’s most classic hits, this is a great celebratory chapter in an already excellent collection
Considering the fact that I’m old enough to remember the early days of Atari, arcades, and home gaming consoles, the Atari 50 collection was an incredible walk down memory lane. Sure, it was great to load it up and have the chance to sample multiple iterations of classic titles from over the years, and in multiple forms in some cases, but the history that it celebrated was also a treat. Watching interviews with some of the most influential people of their time, and seeing print ads or even early design sketches and notes from the creation of classic titles was truly fascinating. This Namco-focused DLC provides another intriguing chapter featuring more of the same, just all revolving around this specific company responsible for bringing the world the likes of Pac-Man and some other classics as well. I’ll admit that loading up both the Atari 2600 and 5200 versions of the classic maze muncher was like a time warp for me, considering I owned the game on both systems and have some fond memories of playing them both. Being able to see the obvious jump in quality from system to system, and understanding how far the industry has come since those early days, serves as a great time capsule for preservationists to be sure. But it would be a mistake to in any way discount the value of those supporting materials once again, including the story of the company’s origin and its direct ties to Atari. I could listen to Nolan Bushnell read from a dictionary and be happy most likely, but getting some of his insights into those early days in the industry is always pretty wild. Throw in interviews with people who contributed to other projects, and understanding the hurdles they faced in trying to bring some of these arcade titles home, and this absolutely feels like a terrific addition to a collection that was already fascinating in its own right.
