Keeps things classic with its retro platforming shooter style, and a pinch of difficulty makes it feel more contemporary

When you’re playing budget games with more of a simplistic and retro style, it can be easy to get a bit jaded. There are absolutely those that aim low with their goals and don’t tend to deliver very compelling play, but then there are others that may not be amazing but at least appear to be trying to make the most of what they’re working with. Agent Fall won’t be winning any awards for its looks or its complexity, but that doesn’t mean that it fails to be enjoyable enough to feel like a reasonable deal for the price of admission.

Whether you tackle it solo or with a friend, you’ll be working to infiltrate a top secret facility and stop some nefarious types who are playing with alien technology. While you’ll start with your base weapon, as long as  you’re able to stay alive you’ll periodically get the chance to work with more formidable ones which can be fun. You also have a number of grenades to work with that are handy in a pinch, but you’ll need to get used to their range to be sure you’re not wasting them.

Aside from having to gun down enemies, you’ll need to take care and avoid a number of traps that will vary from environment to environment. This helps to break things up and adds some variety, though for the most part you’ll just need to be patient and time your movement so the level of complexity still remains relatively low. What’s nice is that even though it’s visually quite simple, it’s hardly a cakewalk. Certain situations and sections will require some skill to get through unscathed, and the periodic boss battles will force you to stay on the move and to roll with the punches. While perhaps its scale isn’t that well-suited to handheld play, overall it feels like it delivers some fun and a decent challenge for the price.
